Bourcefranc le chapus

A small fishing village near the bridge across the sea to Ile d'Oleron about 10 mins drive from the chalet. There is a good restaurant, picturesque harbour and off-shore tower connected to shore at low tide by a causeway.

There is an oyster festival in early August.

This village was featured in Rick Stein's cooking series in August 2005.

Ile d'Oleron

Offshore island connected by a bridge to the mainland about a mile from the chalet. Seaside towns with citadel, frequent shows and events.

Many beautiful beaches on the south side of the island with good surfing and naturist beaches.

Fort Boyard

Location of the TV show.

Brouage

Ancient citadel and city walls, bars and restaurants, church with exhibitions about Canada - the founder of French Canada came from here.

Marennes

The local town about half a mile from the site.

There are several restaurants and bars, two supermarkets and local shops as well as indoor and outdoor markets.

Zoo at La Palmyre

Famous zoo, 1600 animals and well kept. Well worth a visit. About 45 minutes drive south.

 
 

Royan

Large, busy seaside town with seafront bars and cafes, funfairs, beaches, shops and all the fun of the seaside. About an hour's drive.
